Why participate?

Participating in a clinical trial can offer several benefits:

  • Access the latest and most innovative treatments.
  • Benefit from new diagnostic tests and close medical follow-up.
  • Contribute to the advancement of knowledge about breast cancer and its treatment, which will benefit future patients.

Thanks to clinical research, there have been impressive advances in the treatment of breast cancer over the past forty years.

Here are some examples:

  • Before, most of the patients had to undergo radical surgery. Now, thanks to scientific discoveries, there are more targeted and less invasive treatments, such as conservation surgery, which reduces the side effects associated with surgery.
  • Clinical trials have demonstrated the efficacy of hormonal therapies for hormone-dependent cancers as well as trastuzumab (Herceptin) for HER2-positive cancers.
  • The TAILORx study showed that for women with early breast cancer and an intermediate risk of recurrence (recurrence score determined by genomic testing), the addition of adjuvant chemotherapy (after surgery) to hormone therapy provided no additional benefit. These research results have changed clinical practice and will prevent thousands of patients from receiving unnecessary chemotherapy each year.

Clinical research has played a key role in improving breast cancer treatments and has led to the development of more effective screening and health programs.

How to participate?

You should consider participating in a clinical trial as soon as you are diagnosed and before treatment begins.

Once treatments are started, the options available for clinical trials may be more limited due to specific study criteria.

If you have a recurrence of cancer or metastatic cancer, you may also be eligible for a clinical trial.

Be aware that clinical studies have strict inclusion and exclusion criteria. Only your physician (or the research physician) can check whether you meet these criteria.

Participation in a clinical trial is voluntary. If you are interested in participating in a clinical trial, first talk to your physician. Your physician may work with a research center that offers clinical trials for its patients. Otherwise, they may refer you to another hospital where you may be able to find a clinical trial that is right for you.

Finally, you can browse the clinical trials in which the Group is participating or consult several websites that can direct you to ongoing clinical trials. Once this research is done, you may want to discuss it with your physician.
